Technology Leveraged to Improve Patient Care

Raphael Health Center transitions to electronic medical records with the help of donated software and NPower's network infrastructure improvements.

Challenge

Raphael Health Center experienced rapid growth in the size of its staff, and was not maintaining its technology resources to properly accommodate this expansion.  The organization was utilizing outdated servers that were slowing operations and had a high risk of breakdown.  Additionally, insufficient software was also a hindrance to daily operations and employees’ ability to create patient records, reports and other important documents.  With the expected addition of even more PC users, Raphael Health Center needed to establish a secure and reliable system to store its information and facilitate communication among employees.

Solution

NPower Indiana installed two new servers to provide Raphael Health Center with more storage space to accommodate its expanding staff.  In addition, the organization received Microsoft Windows, Exchange, and Office through the Microsoft/NPower software donation program.

With such a large network of users, it was important that someone on staff be equipped to address basic technical issues that might arise.  Accordingly, NPower provided training for an on-site administrator who is now capable of performing administrative tasks and troubleshooting problems with the new system.

Impact

As a result of NPower’s services and the new Microsoft products, Raphael Health Center now has a more efficient operation and a reliable server environment to house its data.  The staff has moved from a heavily paper-based recording process to electronic management of files, which is less time-consuming and easier to maintain.  Executive Director Hoagland Elliot has attributed the success of this data migration to NPower’s skilled network consultants.  “NPower was instrumental in helping our organization transition smoothly to electronic medical records, which has greatly improved the quality of our patient care.  Now staff can instantly access a patient’s history, medical statistics and other pertinent information that may help in diagnosis.”

The organization has also become more self-sufficient in managing basic technology issues due to the training provided by NPower.  Small technical issues no longer become major impediments, as the on-site administrator can most often address them before they interfere with work flow.  Raphael Health Center is now better prepared to handle further increases in size and can be confident that important information is safe and readily accessible to the staff.
